This accessible guide, grounded in scholarly research, is devoted to the Cemetery Church of St. Barbara in Manětín. The building was most likely designed by the distinguished French architect and painter Jean-Baptiste Mathey, who, although French by origin, was trained in Rome. He left a significant mark on early Baroque architecture in the Czech lands, most notably through the construction of the Church of St. Francis Seraph in Prague for the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star, and he also worked for the Cistercian monastery in Plasy.
What makes the church in Manětín remarkable is not only its architecture but also its interior decoration, which was largely the work of the founder’s daughter-in-law, Marie Gabriela Lažanská (née Černínová). Among those who contributed to the church’s furnishings was the outstanding painter Petr Brandl.
The text is accompanied by photographs, drawings, and biographical profiles of the creators of the architecture and furnishings. The publication also includes a selected bibliography and a survey of primary sources.
