The research project deals with the early history of photography in Czech lands between 1839 and 1860. Unlike previous projects, it centres around production, development, distribution and reception of photography produced on paper (calotype and salt paper prints), which in spite of its great potential attracted strikingly less attention of researchers here, than the daguerreotype. Until today, no such in-depth research has been conducted/published. The project aims to survey relevant visual and written primary sources and to identify and analyse omitted names and relevant material of the period (photographs, instruments, written documents etc.) in local collection as well as abroad. The local material will be studied and researched within a broader European socio-cultural context and as such will enrich the international discourse on early photography.
