Pavla Machalíková (ed.)
The monograph on the painter Josef Mánes summarizes the current state of research on this artist’s work with the use of current art-historical approaches and based on a new material examination of his oeuvre. It sets Mánes’s work into the then Central European context, while striving to revise the ideological approaches that accompanied its interpretation from the late 19th century onwards. The book focuses on the characteristics of Mánes’s oeuvre and its relationship to the events and trends on the art scene of his day. The book is comprised of chapters by a number of authors that follow each other thematically so as to cover the entirety of his work and its comprehensive nature. The book is complemented by a systematic chronology of the artist’s life that helps to situate the development of the artist’s creative career against the backdrop of his life and the critical thinking of the time.
