Artist and Networks

Artist and Networks: Friends, Collaborators, and Patrons

Kristina Uhlíková; Radka Heisslerová; Eva Jarošová (eds.).

Visual artists—both men and women—have always moved, and continue to move, within a complex web of social relationships. Even the greatest solitaries are compelled by their profession and livelihood to communicate at least with patrons and commissioners. Other forms of social connection include family, kinship, and friendship networks, as well as collaborators and, not least, competitors.

The collective monograph, prepared in cooperation with the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, presents a set of cultural-historical studies focusing on artists who emerged from different social, economic, and geographical backgrounds, spanning the period from the late Middle Ages to the mid-twentieth century. The contributions examine the social networks of individuals, reconstructing them on the basis of written sources of many different kinds. The wide range of perspectives on highly diverse types of social ties among artists offers a vivid picture of the social networks of European representatives of the visual arts profession over the course of six centuries.
