In the original sense of the word, tradition refers to something that is passed on and received. It is a body of customs, conventions, and habits (even in art). It is closely tied up with the notion of a ‘canon’, the existence of certain norms, and with what is given and accepted in the sense of an agreed and tested set of rules.
