Eva Janáčová (ed.)
Holocaust monuments and memorials in the territory of today’s Czech Republic reflect the turbulent history of the twentieth century, changing attitudes towards this tragedy, and a wide range of artistic approaches. This book captures the contrast between the official culture of remembrance in the post-war decades, which marginalized the Jewish and Roma identities of the victims, and the more inclusive forms of memorial creation that emerged after the fall of the communist regime.
The individual studies examine both the most significant sites, such as the Terezín Memorial and the Pinkas Synagogue in Prague, and more than 600 other monuments documented through several years of research into collective monuments and Holocaust memorials in the Czech lands. Particular emphasis is placed on the historical and political circumstances surrounding the creation of these sites of remembrance, the iconographic motifs employed, and the events associated with their so-called “second life,” including commemorative rituals.
