Aleš Opekar studied Czech language and music education at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University (PhDr. 1987, CSc. 1993). Between 1990 and 1998, he worked as a researcher at the Institute of Musicology, CAS and from 1999 to 2018 as program director for jazz and popular music on Czech Radio's Vltava station where he created a number of specialized music programs. As an expert adviser and scriptwriter, he collaborated with Czech Television on various documentary series, such as Bigbít (1999) and PopStory (2016 and 2020). Since 2006, he has been teaching popular music and world music at the Department of Musicology at the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University in Brno and since 2016, he has also been teaching at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. In 1998, he founded the civic organization Museum and Archive of Popular Music (now Popmuseum, z. s.), of which he is the chairman. In 2019, he began to work at the IAH CAS as a researcher focusing on theory and history of popular music.
