The importance of folk art for the formation of the modern Czech nation and the development of its culture is generally acknowledged, but has yet to be clearly articulated. For over one hundred years folk art as a relatively heterogeneous mixture of forms of artistic expression has served as a universal projection screen on which individuals, groups, institutions, and the state projected their political, social and cultural ideals. Our project will analyze, diagnose, and interpret these phenomena in relation to the political, social and artistic change of Czech and Czechoslovak society, with a focus on its wider Central European context. Our time frame is limited to the period starting 1840 and ending in 1960, a period which witnessed dramatic shifts in the understanding and interpretation of folk art.
