Kristina Uhlíková (ed.)
This publication is a monograph on the building history and decoration of the deanery Church of St. Lawrence in Vysoké Mýto. Its construction likely began soon after the town's founding in the 13th century. The church underwent several extensive reconstructions in the 14th, 15th, 16th, and 18th centuries. At the end of the 18th century, the chancel received a monumental Baroque altar featuring Peter Brandl’s painting Assumption of the Virgin, originally from the monastery church in Sedlec near Kutná Hora. In the last third of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, the church underwent a costly reconstruction according to the design of František Schmoranz Sr. and Josef Mocker, funded by the municipality. Karel V. Mašek and his students from the School of Applied Arts in Prague decorated the interior in the Art Nouveau style. The publication includes a text devoted to the history of the town’s ecclesiastic administration centred around the church, a chapter on the free-standing Renaissance bell tower, and articles on the original church furnishings in the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque periods. It also includes a guide to the interior of the church. The book is complete with a number of historical and contemporary photographs and plans.
